Ian Herbert (BE Electrical UQ 1970) worked as a network engineer for Telecom Aust (pre-Telstra) in Brisbane and Rockhampton. He has always had an interest in lightning protection. As Telecoms District Engineer in Rockhampton, he was responsible for planning and development of the customer access network. Much of this network in rural areas consisted of long runs of buried copper cable which were vulnerable to damage from lightning strike. He was keen to ensure that the best methods were developed to help reduce this vulnerability. After leaving Telecom, he was a lecturer in electrical engineering at Central Qld Uni for 10 years.
