Maxwell’s Magnetic Angle, Uniting Open Wire and Coaxial Theories

Theory

Coaxial theory explains the mutual coupling between a coaxial screen and the core it surrounds. The relationship is independent of every geometric parameter except length. This contrasts with open wire theory that requires the geometric cross section to be between conductors to be defined. That all changes again if the circuit is an earth return circuit. In that circumstance the cross section is an infinite half space plus a bit.

Understanding when to use what theory is one thing, trying to unify them is quite another. Fortunately, within the literature there are clues. As far back as Maxwell the concept of a magnetic angle was introduced. Maxwell didn’t explore it, probably because he didn’t have the technology.

In this presentation we will explore the concept of magnetic angle and what it will mean for current theory and how it will impact earthing.
